Jun 7, 2023 · 1. Notice the gaps between numbers. Unlike an ordinary ruler, the numbers on a slide rule scale aren't spaced on an even, linear scale. Instead, the numbers are spaced using a special "logarithmic" formula, closer together on one side than the other. This lets you line up the scales to get the answer to multiplication problems, as described below.

Simple examples. To multiply 2 times 3. Position the 1 of the C scale (on slide) against the 2 on the D scale (on stock). Move the cursor to 3 on the C scale. Read the answer (6) on the D scale. To divide 5.7 by 3. Move the cursor to 5.7 on the D scale. Position the 3 on the C scale against the 5.7 on the D scale.
(d) How to divide: Division is the opposite of multiplication. The slide pictured on page 4 above is set to divide 55.3 by 3.76. The answer is 14.7. The rule for division is in a box below. Example: 2.39 — Find 1.27 under I on C Dividend + divisor Example: 12 quotient Use hairline to set 1.88 on C over 2.39 on D
Game Clock. Each game is divided into sections, and all levels have two halves. In college, each half is twenty minutes long. In high school and below, the halves are divided into eight (and sometimes, six) minute quarters. In the pros, quarters are twelve minutes long. There is a gap of several minutes between halves.
For example, if you divide 540 by 3 on a slide rule, the slide rule will tell you that the significant numbers are 18. You will use some simple steps in your mind to know the answer is 180, not 1.8 or 18 or 1800, etc.
