The French pronoun y is often used with intransitive verbs (that don’t take objects) when there’s some sort of location involved. Y is also often used to refer to direct and indirect objects. In each case, y generally replaces both the noun, and a preposition that describes some direction of action from the verb.
Using y. 1) Y replaces preposition + place. Y most often replaces a preposition of place, such as à, chez, dans, en, or sur, as well as the place itself. Par exemple… 2) Y for obvious or implied places. Y can refer to a place that is obvious or implied, even if not preceded by a preposition: Par exemple… In English, you can say "I’m going!"
The adverbial pronoun y replaces: places and nouns that are introduced by the prepositions à or en. Example: Demain, ils iront à Lyon. Ils s’ y rendront en bus. places and nouns that are introduced with the prepositions dans, devant, sous or sur. Example: Le bus dépose les touristes sur le parking de l’hôtel.
