Wikimapia is an online editable map - you can describe any place on Earth. Or just surf the map discovering tonns of already marked places.
The goal of Wikimapia is to create and maintain a free, complete, multilingual and up-to-date map of the whole world by compiling as much useful information about all geographical objects as possible whilst enabling free access to our data for public domain.
It still has links to Google+ so it has been a very long time since anyone cared to update the site. Probably makes more sense to add/maintain more Wikipedia links in OpenStreetMap nowadays. Nowadays I think OpenStreetMap has surpassed it. I love Wikimapia.
Wikimapia provides a lot of data, you just need to know how to get it. First of all you can choose how to "view" the map. Different map types can give you "different views" and information. You can search for a particular place. Just type keywords, its address or coordinates in search bar.
