    Aug 20, 2015 · Piedmont (AD-17) was laid down by the Tampa Ship Building Co., Inc., Tampa, Fla. 1 December 1941; launched 7 December 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Elsa Kauffman; and commissioned 5 January 1944, Comdr. Malcolm D. MacGregor in command. Early in February 1944 destroyer tender Piedmont stood out from Tampa, Fla. on her shakedown cruise.

  3. The USS Piedmont was relieved by the Prairie in Yokosuka, Japan and upon leaving was ordered to replenish and refuel destroyers on station off the coast of Russia. After a 7 month cruise, the Piedmont arrived back in Long Beach in February 1974.
