- Hue was untouched by the war until 1968. After the French withdrew from Indochina, and the country was divided into a "democratic" south and a communist north, the city of Hue fell south of the demilitarized zone.

Although the PAVN and Viet Cong attacks throughout South Vietnam were defeated after several days, the battle of Hue was the most successful enemy operation during the Tet Offensive. By the time the struggle was over, more than 8,000 PAVN regulars, an equivalent of two divisions equipped with mortars and recoilless rifles, had fought for the city.
The U.S. Army’s histories of the battle estimates that more than 3,000 civilians were killed or executed by PAVN and Viet Cong forces over the course of the 25-day battle. The city’s residents did not rise up against the South Vietnamese government, and most took shelter and hid from the PAVN and Viet Cong soldiers.
