- It was built by the widow of a firearms magnate. William Wirt Winchester was the treasurer of the Winchester Repeating Firearms Company until his untimely death in 1881.
- Legend has it a medium told her to move to California and build a new house. After both her young daughter and husband died in quick succession, Sarah supposedly went to visit a medium.
- The house was under continuous construction for 38 years. Sarah purchased a farmhouse in California’s Santa Clara Valley in 1884 and set to work building her mansion.

A 1 hour 5 minute guided tour of the Winchester House costs $41.99 for adults, $34.99 for seniors, and $19.99 for children 5-12. We joined a group guided tour that included 12 other people. Our tour guide was entertaining and energetic as she led us on a 65-minute scripted tour of the mansion.
