Kamishibai (kah-mee-shee-bye) or “paper drama” is a form of storytelling that began in Buddhist temples in Japan in the 12th century. The monks used e-maki (eh-mah-key) or “picture scrolls” to tell stories with moral lessons to people who were mostly uneducated.
These videos accompany the Kamishibai Scheme of Work in which students are introduced to traditional Japanese folktales and hone their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in the process. The videos can also be used with our additional resources to make kamishibai at home.
