Kamishibai (kah-mee-shee-bye) or “paper drama” is a form of storytelling that began in Buddhist temples in Japan in the 12th century. The monks used e-maki (eh-mah-key) or “picture scrolls” to tell stories with moral lessons to people who were mostly uneducated.
Through workshops and residencies in classrooms and libraries, I have developed techniques for teaching students to perform their own kamishibai stories, and I have come to see kamishibai—much as Matsunaga Kenya described it more than 70 years ago—as a marvelous instrument for education, the full potential of which has yet to be realized.
