On 4 July 2011, Otto von Habsburg, also known as Otto of Austria, former head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine and Sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece (1922–2007), and former Crown Prince (1916–1918) and, by pretense, Emperor-King (from 1922) of Austria-Hungary, died at 98 years of age.
On Sunday, November 10th, 1918, a Habsburg Emperor attended mass in the Imperial Chapel of Sch ö nbrunn for the last time. The young Emperor Charles, nephew of the murdered Archduke Francis Ferdinand, great-nephew of Francis Joseph, knelt at the prie-dieu of his ancestors, white and trembling.
It was he who, in 1282, bestowed Austria and Styria on his two sons Albert (the future German king Albert I) and Rudolf (reckoned as Rudolf II of Austria). From that date the agelong identification of the Habsburgs with Austria begins (see Austria: Accession of the Habsburgs).
