    • Avoid comparing yourself to others. This is easier said than done, but try to avoid comparing your social life to anyone else’s. It’s not the number of friends you have or the frequency of your social outings that matters.
    • Take a step back from social media. Social media isn’t inherently bad or problematic, but if scrolling through your feeds makes you feel left out and stressed, take a few steps back.
    • Take a phone break. Noticing a theme here? Cellphones and social media have undoubtedly changed the concept of being alone. Is anybody really alone when they can pick up their phone and text or call just about anyone?
    • Carve out time to let your mind wander. Does the thought of doing absolutely nothing unsettle you? That’s probably because it’s been a long time since you’ve allowed yourself to just be.
    • Immerse yourself in meaningful activities—and enjoy the moment. "Researchers that study happiness are pretty clear that happiness is more about how you spend your time and [your mindset] than if you are in a relationship or not," Dr. Taitz says.
    • Recognize that not all your thoughts are facts. Breaking a negative thought cycle—aka I'm never going to find love or All the people worth dating are already taken—can be tricky.
    • Don't wait to be in a relationship to pursue your life goals. Dr. Taitz tells her unhappily single clients to ask themselves one question: How would being in a happy relationship change your life?
    • Use your past to inform—not sabotage—your future. "I can't even tell you how many of my clients are so scarred from past relationships or breakups that they can't think positively about finding love again," Dr. Taitz says.
    • Set goals. A great way to focus on yourself—whether you're single, in a romantic relationship, or otherwise—is to set goals for yourself and steadily work toward achieving them.
    • Prioritize your self care. Self care can mean many things, but Buxani-Mirpuri says paying special mind to movement, nutrition, and meditation are all especially worthwhile ways to take care of your body, mind, and soul.
    • Journal. Journaling is another form of self care that can help create a space to unload and process your thoughts and feelings. Rachel Wright, LMFT, a psychotherapist who focuses on sexual health, relationships, and mental health, recommends journaling every morning to start off your day with a gratitude list—and Buxani-Mirpuri agrees.
    • Know your worth. Remember, happiness doesn't need to be dependent on any outside person or thing. “Relationships, when healthy, are wonderful and add to [our lives]; however, the absence of them does not mean that [your] life is incomplete,” says Buxani-Murpuri.
