Occupying a part of the Great Rift Valley, the Red Sea has a surface area of about 174,000 square miles (450,000 km²): Being roughly 1,200 miles (1,900 km) long and, at its widest point, over 190 miles (300 km) wide.
The Red Sea is 360 km (225 mi) wide at its widest point and is about 1,960 km (1,220 mi) long, from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the south to the tip of the Sinai Peninsula in the north. The southern two-thirds of its length are in the tropics.
It extends southeast from Suez, Egypt (initially as the Gulf of Suez), for about 1,200 mi (1,930 km) to the Strait of Mandeb, which connects with the Gulf of Aden and then with the Arabian Sea. The Red Sea separates the coasts of Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea from those of Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
