Howard Florey died at age 69 of a heart attack on February 21, 1968 in Oxford – he had suffered from angina for a number of years. Survived by his children and second wife, he was buried in Oxford’s St. Nicholas Churchyard.

May 21, 2018 · The Australian experimental pathologist and teacher Howard Walter Florey, Baron Florey of Adelaide (1898-1968), helped isolate penicillin and develop it as a successful nontoxic antibacterial agent for use in medical treatment.
Howard Walter Florey was born in Adelaide, South Australia, on 24 th September 1898, the son of boot manufacturer Joseph Florey and his second wife, Bertha Mary (née Wadham). He was educated at St. Peter’s College where a remarkable teacher, ‘Sneaker’ Thompson, fostered his interest in chemistry.
