Hugo De Vries is the main antagonist of Inspector Morse franchise, being the archenemy of Inspector Endeavour Morse.

He was portrayed by Ian McDiarmid, who is best known for portraying Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars film series and voiced Lord Henry Wotton in the BBC Radio adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

•Despite being a one-shot antagonist who only appeared in the television series, De Vries is the most dangerous adversary Morse had ever faced, as well as his archenemy.

•In addition, he would arguably be one the closest things to be the franchise's main antagonist (alongside another contender, Gwen Morse) if not for his limited appearances.

•De Vries is notable for being the only antagonist who nearly defeated Morse during the latter's prime, but is not chronologically the first. The first villain who defeated the Morse was Clive Deare, when Morse was still a young constable at the time.

•It remained uncertain whether he will make an appearance in Endeavour or a following series if there has one. Even though he eventually does not appear in Endeavour, it is possible for him to make an appearance if there is a future series.

•It is stated that Morse had confronted him during his sergeant career, of which Enedavour was showing. It is possible that they made their first confrontation not long after Morse being transferred to McNutt's station.

•De Vries is often considered to be Inspector Morse franchise's equaivlance of Professor James Moriarty in terms of his role as Morse's greatest adversaries.

Fool Morse twice, and it’s pretty clear that you’re actually an old adversary with form in this area (shame on him, then, for forgetting the lessons of that season two Endeavour finale).
    • Second Time Around, Season 5 (1991) “Patrick thinks you’re a very good detective. Poor policeman, and a very good detective.” When Deputy Assistant Commissioner Charlie Hillian (Maurice Bush) is murdered at his home on the night of his retirement party, suspicions fall upon those liable to be affected by the publication of his planned book on the most memorable cases from his time in the force.
