Occupation (s) Actor, singer. Years active. 1972–1989. Ian Charleson (11 August 1949 – 6 January 1990) was a Scottish stage and film actor. He is best known internationally for his starring role as Olympic athlete and missionary Eric Liddell in the Oscar -winning 1981 film Chariots of Fire.
He performed at the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) from 1977 to 1989. Had a lovely tenor voice as an adult; the Royal Shakespeare Company released a CD of his singing in 1982. He died of AIDS at the early age of 40.
