While the creators and titles highlighted on those lists and this one are just the tip of the iceberg, here is a selection of widely acclaimed and culturally significant creator-owned comic book titles from Black creators.
- Freelance Writer
- Afua Richardson. Afua Richardson is a Big 3 veteran who has worked on various books including X-Men ’92, and Genius, a timely political thriller published by Image Comics in 2015.
- Anthony Piper. Anthony Piper is best known for his work on Trill League. His cover for Terminus Media’s Route 3 #3 won a Glyph Award at the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention in 2014.
- Ashley A. Woods. Ashley A. Woods got her start with her webcomic Millenia War (which, unfortunately, seems to have disappeared from the internet). She’s now the artist on one of my favorite comics at the moment: Niobe She is Life.
- Brian Stelfreeze. Brian Stelfreeze provided covers for DC Comics’ Batman: Shadow of the Bat, as well as pencil work and inks on hundreds of other titles, including Boom Studios’ Day Men, which is a must-read.

- Bitter Root (Image) For those well-versed in indie comics, this supernatural fantasy may feel too obvious to include, but I’m doing it anyways. Set on the backdrop of the roaring ’20s, the Sangererye family specializes in curing those infected with hate.
- The Antagonist (GodHood Comics) The Antagonist follows a family of (former) Black super villains mostly considered evil because they fight for Black people.
- Bingo Love (Image) Spearheaded (on Kickstarter) and created by Tee Franklin (who just finished Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour), Bingo Love shares the decades-long love story between two Black women.
- Black, Black AF, and White (Black Mask Studios) Okay, so this is technically three titles, but you should start with Black to get the central premise down.
