The Indo-European languages are a family of several hundred related languages and dialects, [2] including most major languages in Europe, the Iranian plateau, and South Asia . Historically, the language family was also important in Anatolia and Central Asia. The earliest Indo-European writing is from the Bronze Age in Anatolian and Mycenaean Greek.

English is a West Germanic language in the Indo-European language family, whose speakers, called Anglophones, originated in early medieval England. The namesake of the language is the Angles, one of the ancient Germanic peoples that migrated to the island of Great Britain.

Lexicon and culture. Much less is known about the parent language’s vocabulary than about its phonology and grammar. Sounds and grammatical categories do not easily disappear or undergo radical change in so many daughter languages that their former existence can no longer be detected.
Indo-European is the best known and most studied linguistic family. Its documentation spans a period of almost 4,000 years.
