     Sounds like you need a status on the inventory table. For example, a record for an arbitrary tool can have a status field that is a foreign key in the "Statuses" table. The Statuses table could look like this:

     ID Description-----------------------1 Available2 In Use3 Broken

     ... etc.

     Your Inventory table could look like this:

     id status_id description-------------------------------------1 2 Hammer2 1 Hammer3 3 Hammer4 1 Saw5 3 Saw

     Then, when you calculate inventory, only show records where a tool has a status of "1" for Available. You could also run queries for management to show how many tools are "Broken". Plan for eventually deleting these records once the broken tools are accounted for properly, or, keep them for historical data purposes.

     At all costs, avoid creating separate tables for the disposition of any entity in the database. Use a "flag" field (i.e. status_id), so you can add new statuses to an application without needed to infinitely add new tables.

     I have seen both approaches at my current company and would definitely lean towards the first (calculating totals based on stock transactions).

     If you are only storing a total quantity in a field somewhere, you have no idea how you arrived at that number. There is no transactional history and you can end up with problems.

     The last system I wrote tracks stock by storing each transaction as a record with a positive or negative quantity. I have found it works very well.

     It depends, inventory systems are about far more than just counting items. For example, for accounting purposes, you might need to know accounting value of inventory based on FIFO (First-in-First-out) model. That can't be calculated by simple "totaling inventory received - total of inventory sold" formula. But their model might calculate this easily, because they modify accounting value as they go. I don't want to go into details because this is not programming issue but if they swear by it, maybe you didn't understand fully all their requirements they have to accommodate.

     I would update the item/product table to include a current_stock_level column. There would be a check constraint against this column to ensure that it is always >= 0.

     Having done this, your transaction to insert the order will need to decrement the stock level according to the quantity ordered as well. If someone has ordered more stock than is available, they will violate the constraint and receive an error.

     If you want to verify the stock level against the transactions, then keep the initial_stock_level column. You can then run a daily/weekly/whenever process to verify that this minus the sum of orders equals the current stock level. If these are different then you can either update the current level or raise an alert to someone to investigate this.

     Once this verification process (successfully) completes, update the initial_stock_level to the current level. Also include a stock_level_verified date to indicate the last time this was run.

     Note if your system has constant use 24x7, you may run into concurrency issues running this checking process as people can decrement the stock while you're doing this. You'll need to think about how you're going to manage this.

     Don't store multiple values in one column in a relational database - it's generally considered bad practice.

     It would be better to have two tables, one with a product name and product ID, and another for variations (having columns variation_id, product_id, size, colour, quantity). The product_id column in the variation table will be a foreign key to the product table.

     One. should every single bottle be stored as an individual InventoryUnit object in my database?

     If you can sell them individually, then yes, else track them by the case/box .

     Two. what's the best practice to decrease my inventory? if i sell a bottle, do i destroy an InventoryUnit? or should i just add a status-column that can be "sold" or "in-stock"?

     Use the concepts of Locations and Movements (a movement should be its own entity). OpenERP for example uses "virtual locations" similar to this.

     Bottle smashes? Move it from its inventory location to the "damaged" location Bottle went missing? Move it from inventory to the "ether" location Found a random bottle? Move it from "ether" to inventory Sold a bottle? Move it from inventory to "sold" Bought a bottle? Move it from purchased to inventory

     Three. i'm worried for performance, can Postgres handle hundreds of thousands of InventoryUnit objects?

     Postgres can handle hundreds of billions of objects. Normalize properly. Use small data types. Use indexes.

     Some other things to keep in mind:

     • You could sell something, and it's returned, and you put it back in inventory
     • You could buy something, but it ain't right, so you send it back to the seller
     • You could sell something that you don't own (on consignment, or not in inventory yet)
     • You might have something in inventory that is not currently for sale.

     For accounting inventory, you also need to count the goods on inbound and outbound shipments that you're responsible for, based on the free-on-board FOB status.

     You need to count raw goods (DIY winemaking stuff?) and works in progress if you make/assemble anything, as well as ordering costs, etc.

     Consigned goods are not counted in accounting inventory.
