On September 11, 1862, Iowa became the first state to accept the provisions of the Morrill Act. A considerable debate followed the acceptance of the grant over which institution, the State University of Iowa in Iowa City or the proposed agricultural college, should receive the funds.
IOWA STATE HISTORY. Iowa State University is one of the nation’s leading land-grant universities. Chartered in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, it became the nation’s first land-grant institution when the General Assembly awarded it the state’s land-grant charter in 1864.
