  2. After all of that, can 2013 even pretend to compare? Read this 2012 vs. 2013 movie throwdown to find out. I can’t remember a better year to be a geek and a movie lover than 2012. The...

  4. In August, I thought 2013 was headed for one of the worst years for film. But as more of the Academy Award hopefuls have been released as well as being able to see some great indie films now on Netflix Instant and Redbox, I've changed my view completely. I won't claim 2013 is the best year in movies but it's not bad.

Denis Villeneuve's name can probably be heard repeatedly chanted at every sci-fi nerd's movie night nowadays, but prior to 2013, the Canadian director had nothing under his belt but a handful of shorts and a pair of intimate indie foreign flicks. The filmmaker's first mainstream film, Enemysees Jake Gyllenhaal give a troubled yet exciting dual perf...

Hayao Miyazaki is the true heart and soul of Studio Ghibli and a downright legendary filmmaker in his own right. The Wind Rises sees one of the animator's dream projects come to fruition: telling the story of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japan's fighter planes during World War II. Just about everyone can agree that this film is breathtaking...

In the mood for a crowd pleasing sci-fi rom-com? It might be an oddly specific ask, but About Timehas just what you're looking for. A film that's as British as it is sickeningly sweet, About Time is the kind of movie that will grab hold of your heart (no matter how cold or brooding it may be) and refuse to let go. From Richard Curtis of Love Actual...

There's not much to say about 12 Years A Slave that hasn't already been said. It might very well be the least controversial movie to win Best Picture in the 2010s. Every award it has received is well-deserved. To this day, the sequence where Chiwetel Ejiofor sings Roll Jordan Rollstill gives audiences chills every time, a masterclass in building em...

As one of the definitive iconic movies of 2013, Spike Jonze's Her is maybe the must-watch movie of the year. The premise isn't necessarily the most original, but it was quite novel in the mainstream movie space of 2013. Herproved to be one of the most wildly influential sci-fi films of the decade, inspiring the themes and look of countless movies a...

Upstream Color, Shane Carruth's hotly anticipated follow up to the mythic Primer after nine long years, might be the first true wildcard on this list. The enigmatic director's first film made humongous waves in the independent film community back in 2004 when a nobody with a math degree showed up to Sundance with a heady, ultra-complex time travel ...

The directorial duo of Ethan and Joel Coen have become something akin to legends for many in the film community. Even among the biggest of fans, there doesn't seem to be a clear-cut favorite among the crowd—a testament to the brothers' talent. But a consistent favorite pick for the Best Coen Brothers film is 2013's Inside Llewyn Davis, a melancholi...

The Act of Killing is possibly the most disturbing and also the most important film ever made. Saying something like that after putting it third might sound strange, but this filmis not necessarily an easy movie to recommend—or watch all the way through. The Act of Killingis a documentary by Joshua Oppenheimer that focuses on Anwar Congo, a war cri...

The less said about Whiplash, the better. With tight editing and a frightening performance from J.K. Simmons, the film is a sweat-inducing, pulse-pounding ride. Miles Teller plays a determined music student who channels his rage, hunger, fear, greed, and the unquenched and unfettered desire that swirls in a young artist's mind through his toms, his...

Perhaps more than any other movie on this list, Fruitvale Stationhas become more and more relevant every year since its release. Prior to 2020, this movie seemed to almost be falling under the radar, but a revitalized interest in the Black Lives Matter movement caused a bit of a renaissance for the movie, whose themes seemed to resonate like never ...

  6. I don't think it's a great year; there's a fair few releases still to come but comparing it to previous years, I found 2013 and possibly 2014 to have more strong stand-out films. However, it probably beats 2012 and 2011.
