In terms of accomodations, I think you will find more of the upscale hotels on the East Beach side (Doubletree, MarMonte, etc), and more boutique and inexpensive hotels on the West Beach Side. However, there are some of both on each side.

East beach is very popular among locals and offers a nice, clean sandy beach with a water fountain and picnic tables. Parking is next to it. A great place to spend and afternoon and catch a few waves body surfing.
