Bruce Gordon is a scientist whose work lead him to be possessed by the evil demon of vengeance Eclipso. Bruce Gordon was on Diablo Island in the South Pacific to photograph an eclipse. The natives, fearing that he would steal their "sun god" sent their witch doctor, Mophir to stop him.
I would say Eclipso was the 1st of God's vengeance. The Spectre is the 2nd, and I guess by the time Spectre himself 'fell', DC's The Presence finally wised up and realized the overall problem, and sort of 'fixed' it via human bonding.
In modern times, Eclipso has returned not as a simple demon, but as a god of vengeance, still trapped within the Heart of Darkness. Previously an inhabitant of Gemworld, his diamond is delivered to Gordon Jacobs, who is possessed by the god and kills his partner.
