  2. Mar 30, 2024 · Is Genoa a nice place to visit? Genoa is a fascinating historical city and hosts some of the best attractions and landscapes in Italy. There are so many things to do and see that a whole book probably wouldn’t cover all the reasons why you should visit it — therefore here’s my TOP 10. Hi!

    • Breathtaking views are all over the place. This is where Genoa’s uneven topography comes in handy, as each turn will give you a different perspective where hills, buildings, and the azure Gulf melt together.
    • It’s the birthplace of pesto and focaccia. No other place has a more typically Mediterranean cuisine than Genoa, except perhaps Greece. Fresh and locally sourced ingredients are the name of the game all over Italy, but here a general preference has turned into a strict rule.
    • Genoa is brimming with history. It’s not a coincidence Genoa is home to Italy’s biggest port; the city was once one of the naval powers in the Mediterranean and clashed with Venice for supremacy over the region.
    • Its maze-like old town is unique. Who would’ve thunk that a pretty unassuming place like Genoa features the largest medieval old town in Europe? • Swing by the Antica Barberia Giacalone. Tucked away like an old secret in Genoa's bustling historic center, Ancient Barberia Giacalone sits with a gravitas few places manage to hold onto.
    • Head to the Antica Confetteria Romanengo. Walking into The Antica Confectionery Romanengo in Genoa, I felt like I'd stumbled into a time machine. From decadent chocolates to those ethereal sugared almonds, jellies, and fondants — this wasn't just a confectionery, it was an odyssey of tastes.
    • Swing by the Antica Vetreria del Molo at Night. In the heart of Porto Antico, I stumbled upon this gem, the Antica Vetreria del Molo. Nestled away from the clamor, it felt like uncovering a secret speakeasy from the Prohibition era.
  4. I wouldn’t recommend taking a week-long trip exclusively to Genoa. But I do think Genoa is worth visiting for a few days and is a fantastic stop on a cruise. The main attractions all deserve to be visited, from Genoas main square to its glorious Renaissance palaces. I was very pleasantly surprised by Genoa.
