I really recommend you not reading more about the show and just continue watching after season 1, there will be probably a lot of things you will love. This show has low moments, but also a lot of ups, and good performances, and amazing acting, and characters and ships people love.

I think Glee’s popularity would depend on a few things: The humor. Some things on Glee would have to be either toned down completely for todays audiences to embrace it OR they would have to reallllly stick with the satire in order to get away with certain things They would have to find a way to take advantage of (music) streaming.
It was such a show, so many things wouldn't fly today. The first episode was already a shitshow. Mr. Scheuster spies on a butt naked and showering 16/17 year old Finn, and plants drugs in Finn's locker to blackmail him into joining the glee club. Eh this is when the show was full satire.
I think Glee was part of a cultural shift, where geekiness became acceptable. The cringy songs were part of its charm, it didn't matter because they were having a good time.
