Apr 22, 2024 · My rut hunting experience is 20+ yrs bowhunting northern Wisconsin. Low deer population, no agriculture, national forest. For the most action I would say hunting the edge of a big swamp and catching cruizers skirting the edge near some other terrain pinch is a good bet. However, all the real brutes I have seen were locked down with does.
Apr 25, 2024 · Here’s something I hunt during the rut that has almost no deer sign and trail cameras indicate sporadic activity by bucks most of the fall. To the north are cattail sloughs where deer bed and to the southwest is another big cattail slough and shelter belt where deer bed. It’s about a mile between these two bedding areas.
6 days ago · Rut is the best for A buck or big bucks that don't live on the property. Late season is for the biggest bucks. That obviously varies greatly but hands down the biggest deer iv ever seen are in December.
4 days ago · The biggest bucks we see are always at the beginning of the rut and the end. I try to hunt funnels between doe beds in the mornings and funnels on the way to food in the evenings. Mornings are almost always high up on ridges and evenings are usually lower down near where the does are on food.

You might want to find a target buck, babysit him for a few years, and then set your sights on him when he’s mature. You might also never, ever get a chance to do that.
