May 8, 2022 · No! Like everything else, you practice until you become perfect – well, not perfect per se – most comedy writers would be happy with just okay. We’re going to show you how to write comedy, with script examples from 21 Jump Street and Curb Your Enthusiasm, but first, let’s define comedy writing.
- Know Your Audience. Before you start to think up funny scenes, make sure you know your audience. For example, how old are they? Remember: What makes a 6-year-old laugh will be very different from what a sixteen-year-old would find funny.
- Make Use of Repetition. Comedy writing relies a lot on repetition, which comes with a twist in the end. For example, a “knock-knock” joke works with a formula of repeated words, ending with a surprise.
- Use Delays and Understatements. Part of what makes a great joke funny is the suspense before the performer delivers the punchline. We feel an expectation as it builds up, but not knowing when the other shoe will drop adds to the humor.
- Learn from Comedy Experts. If you can find a mentor for writing comedy, by all means, get connected with that person. If not, the internet is a great way to learn from many experts in comedy writing and performing.
- Comedy Should Have a Message. Ironically, theme is more likely to be ignored in comedy than in any other medium. And yet, comedy has, arguably, the greatest power for sharing theme effortlessly and painfully: if you keep readers laughing, they’ll never accuse you of preaching at them with heavy-handed themes.
- Comedy Should Be More Surprising Than Shocking. Surprise is the essence of comedy. Readers are led to expect one thing—only to be pleasantly surprised by something else.
- Comedy Must Offer Readers a Relatable Protagonist. I can’t remember the last modern comedy I watched or read that featured a truly likable protagonist.
- Comedy Must Be Socially Aware. In her “10 Writing Tips,” Joyce Carol Oates reminds us: You are writing for your contemporaries not for Posterity. If you are lucky, your contemporaries will become Posterity.
