By comparative FISH of six Crocus species from 11 accessions, we demonstrate that C. sativus is an autotriploid hybrid derived from heterogeneous Crocus cartwrightianus cytotypes. The FISH reference karyotype of saffron is crucial for integrating genome sequencing data with chromosomes and for investigating the relationship among Crocus species.
Jul 1, 2019 · The overall similarity between C. sativus and C. cartwrightianus was sometimes the reason to assume that C. cartwrightianus, also called wild saffron, is the progenitor of the crop (Mathew, 1999, Negbi and Negbi, 2002, Jacobsen and Ørgaard, 2004). Nov 19, 2022 · Saffron wild allies are diploid and produce fertile seeds which are easy to breed. One of the ancestors of saffron is very likely the diploid Crocus cartwrightianus (2n = 2x = 16) native to Greece (Aegean islands), while its triploid mutant “C. sativus” was selected and domesticated (Fernández 2004; Nemati et al. 2019).
