Ford Cole (Ray Liotta) is a big-city district attorney with his eye on the mayor's office and a big problem on his hands. His assistant district attorney, Nora Timmer (Jolene Blalock), confessed to killing a man in what she claims was self-defense.
Based on a true story, primarily on a conflict between two youth gangs, a 14-year-old boy's girlfriend conflicts with the head of one gang for an unclear reason, until finally the conflict comes to a violent climax.
It's all shot in the desert, and the dry heat is beautifully captured. Ditto for the costumes. Spader and Brolin's bumbling conmen aren't used to the weather, and their faces are chapped and blistered in startlingly realistic fashion. The movie's biggest problem is Stuart Wilson's bizarre, almost random narration.

This true survival story probably should have contained more of an emotional punch because it is a remarkable tale. However, the filmmakers here appear content on more of a slow burn approach to retelling former pro hockey player and meth addict, at the time, Eric LeMarque's 8 days of hell lost on a snowy mountainside in Winterhaven.
The meet-cute, the lingering stares, heart-wrenching angst, and a kiss in the rain can make the most stoic viewer feel butterflies in their stomach, especially if the story is a slow-burn romance. The pleasure in romance movies comes from anticipation: when a romance is drawn out skillfully, the payoff is much, much sweeter.
