The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria are intended to be an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction. It divides species into nine categories: Not Evaluated, Data Deficient, Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild and Extinct .

Even so, the anaconda hunting program must continue to be evaluated to ensure it sustainability is kept in the long term.
The Red List Index (RLI) of species survival for taxonomic groups that have been assessed for the IUCN Red List at least twice.The blue line indicates the overall RLI for all the taxa combined. A value of 1 is equivalent to all species being categorised as Least Concern; a value of zero is equivalent to all species being classified as Extinct.
