The population is estimated to range between 1.5 to 2.2 million animals and is increasing. However, this is still only 3-7% of the guanaco population before Europeans arrived in South America.
In general, guanaco habitats are characterized by high winds, low precipitation, and low primary productivity (de Lamo et al., 1998; González et al., 2006). Guanacos are distributed over an elevation range from sea level to 4,500 m (Franklin, 2011).
The guanaco starts out using the standard method of ears, body, and tail positions. When the ears are up, it means the guanaco is relaxed. Ears forward means the guanaco is alarmed, and ears laid flat signals aggression. A tail pointing down is normal, straight out is a sign of an alert guanaco, and straight up is an aggressive signal.

In the northern part of the Guanaco’s range, numbers have fallen dangerously low. However, although many populations have been reduced drastically or isolated by habitat loss and fencing, total numbers are still estimated as high as two million, and the species is listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
