  5. The movie is loosely based upon an actual commissioned Navy ship, the USS Echo (IX-95). As in the movie, the Echo was a scow loaned to the Navy from New Zealand in 1942, but was used for carrying cargo and supplies to Army bases in the South Pacific, earning her an Army commendation.

  6. 1942, just after the fall of Corregidor, a group of American POWs plan a desperate escape. One of their number gets away to alert the U.S. Military of the POWs location. The Kiwi is assigned to get them out. Going on the mission is a nurse volunteer to treat the sick and dying men.
