I'd also consider The Man who wasn't There, Miller's Crossing and maybe even Barton Fink as contenders for the list. The Coen Brothers understand noir like no other team in film today. 8. Reply.

But my definition of "classical film noir," and this is agreed upon by many film historians, are films primarily from 1941-1958, include criminal elements and the protagonist is typically compromised and knowingly pursues something forbidden, leading to his typical demise.
