Andronicus was himself a son of Theodora Comnene, the youngest daughter of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos and Irene Ducaena.

For a guy that was very much thrusted into power, Isaac did the best he could. Much of the issues present during his reign were trickled down through Andronikos. The real biggest criticism I think could be levied is that he wasn't the type of man to follow the disastrous reign of Andronikos and fix the empire's problems.
