Adult Ixodes ticks can be differentiated from other ticks in North America on the basis of their geographic origin, inornate scutum, lack of festoons, and long, parallel sided mouthparts. Ixodes spp. are 3-host ticks with the larval, nymph and adult stages occurring on different hosts, usually wildlife. It takes ~3 years to complete the life cycle.
