Although known today as the husband of Unsinkable Molly Brown Margaret Brown of RMS Titanic disaster fame, he was one of the wealthiest men in the United States from his days as a gold mine owner of the Colorado gold and silver booms of the 19th century.
They married on 1 September 1886, at the Annunciation Church in Leadville, and lived in J.J.'s cabin in Stumpftown, a small, primarily Irish community up the hill from Leadville. The Browns had two children: Lawrence Palmer, born in 1887, and Catherine Ellen ("Helen"), born in 1889.

The daughter of Irish immigrants, she was born on July 18, 1867, and spent most of her early years in Hannibal, Missouri.
In 1894, Margaret, her husband J.J., and their two children Larry and Helen moved to Denver, Colorado in the new neighborhood of Capitol Hill. The Brown’s invited John and Johanna to move in with them at 1340 Pennsylvania Street.
