He was Cyrus McCormick Professor of Hebrew and the Old Testament Emeritus at Union Presbyterian Seminary, Virginia. He served as president of the Society of Biblical Literature in 1986. Mays wrote commentaries on Psalms, Hosea, Amos, and Micah.
