It’s a humble explanation for a career that situates Reynolds among the most acclaimed and admired of western artists.
James Reynolds was born in a Standard Oil lease house in 1926 and raised in Taft, California. As a boy, he spent summers at his grandmother’s Nevada City hotel, which was situated just beyond the infamous Donner Pass and literally above the south fork of the Yuba River, supported by stilts. In Nevada City he experienced firsthand the remnants of the Old West and heard the stories of that time.

Harold Warner Reynolds, simply known as James Reynolds, or also with the nickname Jimmy (October 22, 1891 in Syracuse, New York – July 21, 1957 in Bellagio, Lombardy), was an American writer, painter, illustrator, set designer and costume designer.
He would be twice commissioned by Marlboro for paintings depicting the American Cowboy, and in 1992, he would be the first artist to win the prestigious Prix de West International Award, along with the Gold Medal for best oil and Buyer's Choice Award, all in a single year.
