James V (10 April 1512 – 14 December 1542) was King of Scotland from 9 September 1513 until his death in 1542. He was crowned on 21 September 1513 at the age of seventeen months. James was the son of King James IV and Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII of England.

Nov 28, 2022 · James V, who reigned from 1513-42, came to the throne as an infant, after the death of his father, James IV, at the Battle of Flodden. By the latter’s will, the guardian of the new king and interim ruler of the realm was to be his mother Margaret, who was also the sister of Henry VIII.
A highly strung, intelligent man who alternated between black depression and bouts of feverish energy, he had already fathered at least nine illegitimate children by a series of mistresses. He now chose as his wife Princess Madeleine of France, for he was eager to strengthen 'the Auld Alliance' against England.
