Cromwell's film of the previous year, Caged, also concerned a woman sent to prison. It marked Jeff Bridges' film debut.
The story of a female convict (Jane Greer) released from prison to parole officer Lizabeth Scott, The Company She Keeps was designed as a sequel of sorts to Caged (1950), the famous women's prison film made by the same director, John Cromwell.

The Company She Keeps is directed by John Cromwell and written by Ketti Frings. It stars Lizabeth Scott, Jane Greer and Dennis O’Keefe. Music is by Leigh Harline and cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca. Released from prison after serving two years, Mildred Lynch (Greer) changes her name to Diane Stuart and sets out for a new start in Los Angeles.
Jane Greer plays a hard-boiled dame so well in The Company She Keeps that the film's outcome remains in doubt right up to the end. Placed in the custody of parole officer Joan (Lizabeth Scott), Diane (Greer) immediately makes a play for Joan's boyfriend, newspaper columnist Larry (Dennis O'Keefe).
The Company She Keeps 1951 ★★★. Watched Feb 10 , 2024. The romantic plot is a non-starter, but as a movie about difficulties faced by ex-cons this is actually intriguing and it is a good showcase for Jane Greer. I wish this served Lizabeth Scott better, as it stands the movie is very unbalanced.
