Each new season of Game of Thrones is met with a huge amount of anticipation and excitement. But the excitement is hitting a whole new level with Season 8, as HBO is finally bringing this epic fantasy saga to an end.

The final battle between the living and the dead in Westeros is looming! So to help prepare you for what's coming, we've broken down everything you need to know about Season 8, from the release date to the structure to the plot.

New seasons of Game of Thrones always tend to premiere in the spring (ironic given the show's emphasis on the coming of winter) and Season 8 is no exception. The final season will debut on Sunday, April 14.

The main difference this time around is that it's been nearly two years since the previous season debuted back in July 2017. But with a season this ambitious in scope and cost, it only makes sense that HBO would need more time to prepare.

Most Game of Thrones seasons have followed a similar format of 10 roughly hour-long episodes. Not this time. In terms of episode count, Season 8 will be the shortest of them all, clocking in at just six installments.

The good news is that most episodes will be significantly longer than the norm. Episodes 3 through 6 will each run roughly 90 minutes long. Just think of the final season as a series of feature-length movies rather than a traditional TV series.

An ominous teaser trailer for the season was released in January. Check out our breakdown of the segment here:

The full Game of Thrones Season 8 trailer was released by HBO in early March. Check out every clue and Easter egg we found in the footage from the final season below.

Wrapping up the Song of Ice and Fire is no small task, and all the usual suspects are returning for the final season. David Benioff and DB Weiss are again serving as showrunners and also directed the series finale, with directors David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik dividing up the other five episodes. Ramin Djawadi is again composing the music.

Fans can expect all the principal actors to return (those whose characters haven't been killed off by now). Season 8's cast includes Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei, Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth, John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark, Rory McCann as Sandor Clegane, Conleth Hill as Varys, Carice van Houten as Melisandre, Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane, Hannah Murray as Gilly, Jerome Flynn as Bronn, Joe Dempsie as Gendry and Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont.

At this late stage, don't expect many new faces to join that massive ensemble cast. The one major new addition we know about for Season 8 is Marc Rissmann, who will play Harry Strickland, the commander of the mercenary army known as the Golden Company.

HBO has understandably kept Season 8's production under careful guard, trying as much as possible to prevent spoiler leaks. However, given how Season 7 ended, we know the basics of the conflict fueling this final season. Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow will attempt to rally the armies of Westeros against a common enemy, as the White Walkers have breached the Wall and begun pouring into the south in massive numbers. Making matters worse is that Cersei Lannister is determined to maintain her grip on power by any means necessary, including hiring the Golden Company and striking against Dany and Jon when they're least prepared to fight a war on two fronts.

That's the gist of Season 8, anyway. Don't be surprised if the plot takes some unexpected twists and turns over the course of these six episodes. In fact, Lena Headey has basically guaranteed that Season 8 won't play out as expected. The good news is that HBO programming chief Casey Bloys has reassured fans by promising they'll be "really, really happy" with the way the series wraps up.

Season 8 will include several major battle sequences. One of these, the Battle of Winterfell, will pit many of the show's surviving characters against the White Walkers and will exceed every other Game of Thrones Battle in terms of its scope and length. In fact, the Battle of Winterfell is described by Entertainment Weekly as the "longest consecutive battle sequence ever committed to film."

Fan may also be able to look forward to another long-awaited showdown in Season 8. Rory McCann teased Cleganebowl, a big showdown between his character Sandor "The Hound" Clegane and his deranged brute of a brother, Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane.

Whatever does happen in Season 8, it may or may not wind up corresponding to what unfolds in the final two (and as yet unpublished) books in the series. Author George R.R. Martin revealed the broad strokes to Benioff and Weiss several years ago as planning for the final two seasons began. However, that doesn't guarantee that the show won't diverge or that Martin's own ending won't have changed by the time The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring see print.

“I’ve been so slow with these books,” said Martin. “The major points of the ending will be things I told them five or six years ago. But there may also be changes, and there’ll be a lot added.”

While there are only six episodes left in the series, Game of Thrones fans shouldn't feel too despondent. HBO has made it abundantly clear they plan to keep on exploring this fantasy universe for the foreseeable future. HBO has several Game of Thrones prequel projects in various stages of development.

The first of these is set some 8000 years before the events of Game of Thrones. HBO's official description teases, "Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know."
