By Nitza Rosovsky. War—or rather two wars—made possible the current golden age of discovery in Jerusalem, at the City of David, at the Temple Mount and in the Old City’s Jewish Quarter. In 1948, during Israel’s War of Independence, the occupants of the Jewish Quarter surrendered to the Arab Legion following a long siege.
Apr 23, 2024 · In the southeast the Jewish quarter represents the newest and most modern part of the Old City. It stands in contrast to the run-down dwellings located there in the early 20th century, when resources devoted to developing Jewish neighborhoods were increasingly concentrated on areas outside the city walls.
The quarter is home to around 2,000 people and covers about 0.1 square kilometers. It is also the location of many tens of synagogues and yeshivas (places of the study of Jewish texts) and has been almost continually home to Jews since the century 8 BCE.
The quarter has a rich history, with several long periods of Jewish presence covering much of the time [dubious – discuss] since the eighth century BCE. In 1948, its population of about 2,000 Jews was besieged, and forced to leave en masse.

A model of the ancient city, built under the auspices of Yad Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, is located in an unassuming house in the heart of the Old City's Jewish Quarter. Planned as an educational tool to teach the history of Jerusalem , the model is scaled at about 1:250 and covers a surface of 35 square meters.
The southeast corner of the Old City, the Jewish Quarter occupies about 15 acres (6 ha) and has been inhabited by Jews for centuries. Following the capture of the Old City by the Arabs in 1948, all Jews were expelled and their buildings destroyed.
