Joan was born in Acre in 1272 whilst her father, Edward, was participating in the 9th crusade. Edward narrowly escaped assassination during the unsuccessful conflict but by September the family was on its way home.

Simon had held the title of count of Ponthieu in right of his wife only, and therefore, when she died in 1251, the title and land passed to her daughter. Joan was the second wife of King Ferdinand III of Castile.
