Joan, Lady of Wales and Lady of Snowdon, also known by her Welsh name often written as Siwan (said, approximately /sɪuːan/) (c. 1191 /92 – February 1237) was the illegitimate daughter of King John of England, and was the wife of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Wales (initially King of Gwynedd), effective ruler of all of Wales.

She was born in about 1191 but history isn’t entirely sure who her mother was. It may have been Clemence Pinel but this information is gleaned from a sentence in the Tewkesbury Annals.

The Lady of Wales was also known for her alleged affair with William de Braose, Lord of Bramber that would later result in the imprisonment and death of Braose.

Born in 1191, most likely to a French mother when we consider her upbringing in Normandy, Joan was brought to England in 1203 to marry Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, who was eighteen years her senior.
Joan of Wales, known as Siwan to the Welsh, was born circa 1191, the illegitimate daughter King John of England, her mother is not known with certainty, but may have been Clemence Pinel. Joan was brought up in Normandy until in 1205 her father her marriage to the Welsh Prince, Llywelyn the Great of Gwynedd.
