John Beaufort, 1st Marquess of Somerset and 1st Marquess of Dorset, later only 1st Earl of Somerset, KG (c. 1373 – 16 March 1410) was an English nobleman and politician. He was the first of the four children of John of Gaunt (1340–1399) (third surviving son of King Edward III) by his mistress Katherine Swynford, whom he later married in 1396.
1403 - 1444. John Beaufort was the second son of John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset and Margaret Holland. His father was the illegitimate son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, (the third surviving son of King Edward III) and Katherine Swynford.
JOHN DE BEAUFORT, 1ST EARL OF SOMERSET, was the eldest of the four children of John of Gaunt by Catherine Swynford, born out of wedlock. He was born c. 1371, possibly at Beaufort Castle in France. After John of Gaunt married their mother in 1396, the children were declared legitimate by Richard II 's parliament of 1397, and by papal bull.
