Connally was President Kennedy's secretary of the Navy from 1961 until being elected governor of Texas in 1962. He was critically wounded in the assassination of President Kennedy, but he survived and was reelected governor in 1964 and 1966. Connally later served as Nixon's secretary of the treasury (1971-1972).
