As you can see, there was clearly a design change between the 1998-2003 and 2004-2011 Ford Ranger. The front fenders, hood, headlights, and grill do not interchange. For this reason, it has been considered the 5th Generation. The Ford Ranger was not offered in North America from 2012-2018.
The Beginnings: The Ranger name started as a trim package on the full size F-Series trucks. Ford had been importing the Ford Courier since 1972 as a compact pick up. The Courier was produced by Mazda and at the time Ford owned a 7% stake in Mazda (Ford acquired a 24.5% stake in 1979). Ford introduced the Ranger as the replacement for the Courier.
The Ford Ranger (T6) is a range of mid-size pickup trucks manufactured and sold by Ford Motor Company since 2011. The T6 consolidated worldwide production of the Ranger onto a single model range, replacing both the 1998–2012 Ranger marketed in North America and South America and the Mazda-derived Ranger sold in Asia-Pacific, Europe and several Latin American markets.
