John Scott passed away in September 2007 at the age of 67. He was born in New Orleans and raised in the lower 9th Ward. John Scott’s earliest work drew on Christian imagery but later, particularly in his sculpture and prints, he focused on African, African-American, Caribbean and Creole cultures.
Biography. John Scott (1950-2022) is one of Canada’s most prolific artists known for his raw, visceral paintings that comment on the dark side of politics, war and humanity. Combining counterculture aesthetics of the late 1970s and 1980s, Scott presents an apocalyptic vision of the world.
Scott has won various national-level awards for his work and has completed several public and privately commissioned installations throughout the United States. Scott traditionally works in mixed media, but he is currently making painted kinetic metal sculptures that draw upon African-American traditions and themes.
