John Ernest Crawford was born on March 26, 1946, into a theatrical and musical family. His earliest memory is that of his mother playing the piano. His maternal grandfather, Alfred Megerlin, was a renowned lead violinist in Germany and Belgium before WWI and moved to America in 1914.
