Jorge Ubico. Jorge Ubico y Castañeda (November 10, 1878 - June 14, 1946) was President of Guatemala from February 14, 1931 to July 4, 1944. Ubico is widely considered the last of the liberal authoritarian rulers in Latin America. A Colonel by the age of 28, Ubico was a military governor by the age of 29. In 1920, he became Chief of Army Staff.
Ubico was an admirer of European fascist leaders such as Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, but had to ally with the U.S. for geopolitical reasons, and received substantial support from this country throughout his reign. A staunch anti-communist, Ubico reacted to several peasant rebellions with incarcerations and massacres.
