For centuries, the area just north of the Old Town Square was the home of Prague’s Jewish population. Nowadays, the Josefov neighbourhood is one of the city’s most bustling districts, full of bars, restaurants, and history. History of Josefov. Josefov is small part of Prague, but important part of its history. The Jewish population in Prague prior to the Nazi occupation in 1939 was over fifty thousands. Today only few thousands Jews live in Prague. Many Jewish people travel to Prague to visit this part of town. It is amazing that it all survived.

The Old Jewish Cemetery is one of the oldest surviving Jewish burial sites in the world, with a remarkable history. Located in the Jewish Quarter, in Josefov, it was established during the first half of the fifteenth century. For many years, it was the only place where the Jewish population of Prague were allowed to be buried.
