The Story of the Apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The original image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, as it is said to have been presented on Juan Deigo Cuauhtlatoatzin's tilma, or cloak, on December 12, 1531. It hangs above the altar of the basilica in Mexico City.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located at the foot of Tepeyac, houses the cloak ( tilmahtli) that is traditionally said to be Juan Diego's, and upon which the image of the Virgin is said to have been miraculously impressed as proof of the authenticity of the apparitions.
